Wisconsin State Fair and other important dates

The Wisconsin State Fair starts its annual 10 day run on August 4th.  Cream puffs, cheese curds, ice cream, brats, corn on the cobb and lots of food on a stick are all here.  Judging of cattle, horses, pigs and feathered friends can be enjoyed each day.

The Wisconsin State Fair certainly has a reputation for unique and unusual foods, which is why they created an Annual Food Competition, The Sporkies. Each year eight finalists are selected from several dozen entries, and a panel of celebrity judges chooses the recipients of three Golden Spork Awards

The first Friday in August, this year it is the 5th, is International Beer Day.  In Wisconsin it is not yet a state holiday but is celebrated with gusto reflecting our German heritage and long brewing history.  Wisconsin’s largest brewers are Miller in Milwaukee, Minhas in Monroe, New Glarus Brewing and Stevens Point Brewing.  However the craft beer industry is growing and Wisconsin is now home to 70 members of the Wisconsin Brewers Guild.

August 6th is National Mustard Day and will be celebrated in downtown Middleton, Wisconsin at the National Mustard Museum.

August 10th is National S’mores Day celebrating that wonderful creation enjoyed around campfires all across Wisconsin.

Oshkosh, Wisconsin has just completed the annual Experimental Aircraft Association show that draws hundreds of thousands of people and hundreds of airplanes.  Aircraft enthusiasts love the opportunity to experience the aviation marvels.  The EAA grounds also are the location of an aircraft museum.

Edible Antics is traveling this week to Sheboygan and Taylor counties in Wisconsin and the Wisconsin State Fair.  We are finding the special Supper Clubs, bakeries, meat markets, breweries, bike trails, wineries, bed and breakfasts, parks, attractions and anything we think you might enjoy in each county we visit.  We’ll post for you our Edible Antics recommended stops for each county.

Wisconsin Food at the Wisconsin State Fair

The Wisconsin State Fair this year runs from August 1 – August 11 and one of the main attractions at the fair every year is the outstanding quality food products which Wisconsin has to offer. Given we are known nationally for our gourmet food, it is no wonder the State Fair has a number of pavilions dedicated to serving up these delectable tasty treats. One such tasty treat is the Cream Puff. If you have never had one, it is a must stop for anyone attending the fair. They truly win a Blue Ribbon attraction.  The cream puffs have their own air conditioned pavilion. There is always a line for the cream puffs, and you can expect anywhere from 25 to over 100 people – but no matter, the line moves fast and while you are standing in line you can  watch, through the display windows, the cream puff chefs making these exquisite creations. The chefs are fun to watch, and they often wave to the public and jester to let us know how much they appreciate our interest.  If you get tired of watching the chefs, then turn your eyes on the people eating the cream puffs.  There are tables to stand at right there in the pavilion where people can dive in and start eating immediately without having to go outside.

wisc-food-state-fair And, if you take a look at the picture of the cream puff, you will understand how fun it might be to watch people try to take a bite out of the cream puff without trajectoring the scrumptious cream center onto the table or person standing next to them.  And not to mention the powdered sugar that gets all over a person’s face and clothing when trying to eat one of the monstrous pastries – what fun!!!  Now the more experienced cream puff eaters (I happen to be one of them) separate the top from the bottom and, as they are separating them,  they make sure there is plenty of cream on both sides. Then one can take a bite without getting too much cream or powdered sugar on their smilling faces.  Yes, they are all smiling because they taste sooo……. Good!.

Although the cream puff is the main food attraction,  there is also a huge Wisconsin Food Pavilion dedicated to all the other gourmet food products Wisconsin is known for. You will find bratwurst, sausage, meats, cranberries, maple syrup, cheese, ice cream, cherries, honey and much more. And, while you are in the Wisconsin Food  Pavilion, don’t miss out on the Grilled Cheese Sandwiches – they are a tasty treat with Read Wisconsin  Cheddar Cheese. Food On A Stick: Blogger Successfully Predicts Stick Food Future

The Wisconsin State Fair is going on right now, and I was looking back at past blog posts and I found this one from 2009 by my fellow blogger Cristie. She contemplated the future of food on the stick at the WIsconsin State Fair:

Food on a stick is all the rage at the Wisconsin State Fair outside Milwaukee. New to the stick-food line-up is chocolate covered bacon, reuben sandwiches, and even cherry pie. Of course the traditional favorites of corn dogs, caramel apples, and ice cream on a stick will still be spotted. food-on-a-stick-1 But I’m just curious, are these newest stick foods a fad or do they have staying power? In 2050, will our grandchildren roam the State Fair nibbling cherry pie on a stick? Or perhaps by then lasagna sticks will be the popular fair food, or even kim-chi on a stick. How about soup sticks, granted it would have to be a hearty soup, say a chili , – chili beans on a stick with salsa? I think the possibilities are nearly infinite when imagination is ingeniously applied to food science. After all, look how far we’ve come from the original food on a stick: the poultry drumstick first enjoyed by our cave-dwelling ancestors. Our fair food future is wide open!

So what future food on a stick would you like to eat at the State Fair in 2050? And why is cotton candy no longer on a stick and now in a bag?

So it’s not 2050 but it is three whole years later and the food on a stick phenomenon that surrounds the Wisconsin State Fair is stronger than ever. Here are some crazy stick foods on the list for this year’s fair:

Chili Cheese Dog- When Cristie wrote this post she wasn’t too far off with her prediction of chili on a stick. This year Saz Rib’s is serving up a chili cheese dog on a stick. Who knew that Cristie is a culinary psychic?

Deep Fried Cream Cheese with Bacon – Leave it to Wisconsin to find yet another way to deep fry cheese.

Chicken Courdon Bleu – I wonder how the French would feel if they knew we were deep frying their culinary classic and putting it on a stick?

Wisconsin Families Share The Cream Puffs: Traditional Wisconsin Food At The State Fair

Eating cream puffs at the Wisconsin State Fair is a tradition for many Wisconsin families. And this Thursday, Aug. 6th, the cream puffs will again be on sale at the State Fair in Milwaukee. Cream puffs are a traditional Wisconsin food.They are mostly butter and cream, – two ubiquitous, Wisconsin foods originating from those bucolic, Wisconsin cows sharing America’s Dairyland with humans. It’s only logical that the traditional Wisconsin foods of butter and cream be mixed together with a bit of flour, eggs and water. What else would be on hand in a Wisconsin farm kitchen? It was Wisconsin’s inevitable destiny to create a delicious, flaky, buttery, creamy, sweet cream puff and share it’s recipe with the world.

Wisconsin State Fair Exhibits The Best Foods, Products, Crafts, Art, and Animals Of Wisconsin!

“Have a cream puff for me!” was Katie’s send-off as I left our Wisconsinmade office on Friday. Wisconsin cream puffs are perhaps THE signature item at the annual Wisconsin State Fair in Milwaukee.state_fair_cream_puff Lauren (8), Dave (5), Grandfather, and I easily found the cream puffs – they had their own pavilion. The purchase line was 50 people long, but moved fast in front of windows revealing smiling cream puff chefs sporting Holstein cow-patterned caps and squirting delicious white mounds of whipped cream on to sliced pastry puffs. We waved to them and they waved back, showing off their work. Every one was caught up in the excitement of this yearly Wisconsin tradition!

Entering the huge Wisconsin Products Pavilion, we saw row after row of display booths showing off all the different kinds of foods Wisconsinites produce. We saw Wisconsin cranberries, cherries, honey, maple syrup, nuts, cheeses, ice cream, pizzas, sausages, meats, potatoes, candy, and more. Alice in Dairyland held center stage, quizzing her audience on which products came from which Wisconsin region.

In the Wisconsin Horticulture, Craft, and Culinary Pavilion we saw the fruits of Wisconsin hobbyists having fun. Amateurs pitted their talents against one another to compete for prizes in baking, cake decorating, gardening, sewing, quilting, leather-crafting, and wood-working. Truth be told, we saw nothing amateurish in their results. The creative ingenuity and skill demonstrated in each craft amazed us.

The competitions continued in the 6 livestock barns. Exotic and farm animals looked their best for the crowds and judges. Our family enjoyed the Rabbit and Poultry Palace. The children ‘oohed’ and ‘aahed’ over the velvety soft, cuddly rabbits. The exquisitely plumaged roosters, hens, turkeys, and doves impressed us too. The colorful patterns of feathers on these domestic birds made woodland birds look drab. So why do children’s books feature poultry in such plain, solid colors? Let their illustrators go to the fair and they might depict animal characters in their true-life glory. These impressive animals were a tribute to Wisconsin breeders working with the myriad varieties of forms and colors nature offers.

And of course, we couldn’t resist watching Wisconsinites play with their animals as well. No pig wrestling this time, but pig racing! And duck racing too! The crowd cheered for their favorites and rooted for the piglet swimming across the pool.
