Here in Wisconsin we are proud to make cheese.  You probably already knew that, right.  But we not only make a lot of cheese – we make the very best cheese.  The US Championship Cheese Contest is held every other year.  This year it was held at Lambeau Field – home of the Green Bay Packers.  There were a record-breaking 2.303 entries from 33 states in this – the largest contest of its kind in the US.  More than 37,000 pounds in 101 classes were judged by 48 judges from 19 states.  They were assisted by over 100 volunteers.  So… how did the Wisconsin Pride logocheesemakers do in the contest you asked?  Well, it turns out that the top three cheeses; the Grand Champion, the first runner up and the second runner up were all produced by Wisconsin cheesemakers!  The Grand Champion was Sartori Cheese Black Pepper Bella Vitano.  First runner up was a one to two year aged Cheddar from Agropur in Weyauwega.  And the second runner up was Marieke Gouda Belegen produced by Marieke Penterman from Thorp Wisconsin.  Wisconsinmade.com is proud to help you find some of Marieke’s award winning cheese.  Her family farm is a great testament to hard work and their vision of producing delicious cheese.  Wisconsin Proud indeed!

Sweet Sixteen Proud!

The University of Wisconsin men’s basketball team did it again!  They knocked off Virginia Tech in the first round and then the number one seeded Villanova to advance to the Sweet Sixteen.  The team has had five wins over the number 1 and 2 seeds in the past four NCAA tournaments and reached the Sweet Sixteen all four years and the Final Four twice.  Thanks to our talented seniors for a great season.  Seniors Vitto Brown, Nigel Hayes, Bronson Koenig and Zak Showalter led this team on a fun run and came up just short on a buzzer beater in overtime.  But we can all be Wisconsin Proud of these men, the team and the wonderful season they just completed.  Thank you to them all.

 

 Easter – Sunday April 16th

Easter Morning Sugar Cookie Gift Tin

Easter this year falls the day after normal “tax day” April 15th.  Bur since that is a Saturday, and the Washington DC Emancipation Day holiday observed on April 17 instead of April 16, 2017 Tax Day is on the following Tuesday April 18th.  But don’t spend Easter Sunday finishing your taxes.  Try some cookies, some hard boiled eggs and a little ham.  Hopefully it will be a beautiful spring day we can all enjoy.

Dane And Dodge Edibles

We continue our culinary tour of Wisconsin counties with a visit to Dane and Doge Counties.  Both of them offer wonderful opportunities to enjoy Wisconsin’s special flare for food and fun.

About 490,000 people live in the 1,202 square miles that is Dane County. The county seat and also the Wisconsin State Capital are both in Madison.  Other cities in Dane County include:

  • Fitchburg
  • Monona
  • Stoughton
  • Verona
  • Middleton
  • Sun Prairie
  • and 18 more villages

The University of Wisconsin main campus with about 40,000 students is located in Madison.  Dane County is the second most populous county in Wisconsin, but it is also the most productive agricultural county in the state.  This output is in corn, soybeans, milk and meat.  Madison is a tourism and convention destination centered on the beautiful State Capitol building and the Frank Lloyd Wright designed Monona Terrace Convention Center

Dodge County occupies 882 square miles and is home to about 89,000 Wisconsinites.  The county seat is in Juneau.  Other cities in the county include:

  • Beaver Dam
  • Fox Lake
  • Horicon
  • Mayville
  • and parts of Watertown and Waupun

The vast Horicon National Wildlife Refuge is in Dodge County and is home to 268 species of bird, including ducks, cranes, herons and shore birds plus numerous marsh dwellers large and small.  It is a favorite migratory stop in the fall for an estimated 100,000 to 300,000 Canada geese and other migrating birds.  It is the nesting grounds for many species birds and is a favorite stop for over 400,000 travelers per year.

Brown County

Brown County is home to about 248,000 folks and occupies 529 square miles.  The county seat is Green Bay.  Brown County hosts the cities of Green Bay and De Pere and the surrounding suburbs but it known as “Title Town”  – the home of our championship football team the Green Bay Packers.  This metro based community has much to offer the visitor including over 400 dining opportunities, microbreweries, a distillery, recreation and cultural activities with abundant lodging.

Buffalo County

Buffalo County is on the far western edge of Wisconsin and offers scenic and pastoral vistas.  It is home to about 13,000 Wisconsinites and is 684 square miles in size. The county seat is the city of Alma.  One side of the county is along the scenic Mississippi River and includes the cities of Fountain City and Mondovi.  While Buffalo County is a more sparsely populated county this rural area supports good dining, interesting lodging and a section of the Great River Road along the Mississippi River.

Here in Wisconsin winter is usually a bit longer than some of us would prefer.  But this year in mid-December the temps are in the 40’s.  There is no snow on the ground.  Walks outdoors around the neighborhood are pleasant.  And each pleasant day like this gets us one day closer to March.

Snickerdoodles are best made with the help of a 5 or 6 year old assistant.

Here is the Betty Crocker version of the recipe for Snickerdoodle cookies:

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter or margarine, softened
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 3/4 cups Gold Medal™ all-purpose or unbleached flour
  • 2 teaspoons cream of tartar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
 Directions
  • 1. Heat oven to 400ºF.
  • 2. Mix 1 1/2 cups sugar, the butter, shortening and eggs in large bowl. Stir in flour, cream of tartar, baking soda and salt.
  • 3.  Shape dough into 1 1/4-inch balls. Mix 1/4 cup sugar and the cinnamon. Roll balls in cinnamon-sugar mixture. Place 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheet.
  • 4.  Bake 8 to 10 minutes or until set. Remove from cookie sheet to wire rack.
