Wisconsin Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving church

It’s a great day to be from Wisconsin!

Wisconsin families are grateful for many blessings this Thanksgiving.  A beautiful extended fall season, bountiful yields for most of our crops, an improving economy and of course our delicious seasonal foods.

Cranberry Chutney

Thanksgiving dinner’s main course could include a ham assortment with cranberry chutney.  This chutney is a unique combination of cranberry chunks with a hint of clove mixed into a sweet cranberry sauce that goes very well with ham, turkey, pork, chicken or game meats.  I have also used it as an ingredient in a grilled cheese sandwich (sometimes with bacon!).  The three jar package on Wisconsinmade.com is perfect for family dinners – one jar on each end of the table and one in the middle. Highly recommended.

Caramel Apples

For dessert there is the pumpkin cream cheesecake.  And for a hostess gift we have a pair of caramel apples, some pumpkin fudge or some fall cookies.

If the tryptophan kicks in get your nap in early because the Thanksgiving football game this year is the Green Bay Packers against their NFL North Division rival the Chicago Bears.  The Packers have scheduled a ceremony and celebration honoring Bret Favre with a planned appearance by Bart Star at Lambeau Field.  Wisconsinites are thankful for the contributions to Packers history made by both of them.  A great way to end our Thanksgiving Day.

We hope your Thanksgiving Day is filled with gratitude and family fun and that you find time to enjoy some of these great Wisconsinmade products that are all

Fall in the Northwoods

“WI MADE” in Wisconsin’s North Woods in Autumn

Wisconsin is America’s Dairy Land, right?  The southern two thirds of the state contains some of the most productive agricultural lands in America.  We have high production totals of milk, cheese, cranberries, apples, potatoes, cherries and of course corn and soybeans.

But the Northern one third of the state contains woodlands, wilderness, lakes and a more rural recreational atmosphere.  Camping, fishing, boating, biking in the summer and cross country skiing, snowmobiling, ice fishing, snow shoeing in the winter.  In the fall it turns to a kaleidoscope of color attracting thousands of visitors (even that Miata “WI MADE”).

But these North woods offer us some unique Wisconsinmade gift options.  The seasons changes bring beautiful colors to the countryside.

The woods also provide us with beautiful hardwood kitchen and office items, wonderful maple syrup, fabulous photography, treats from the kitchens of the woods and guide books to help us enjoy all the woods have to offer.

Tourism, recreation, fishing, hunting, golf, boating, camping, biking, and all things outdoors are the fun and “living” part of Wisconsin.  One of our older state tourism bumper stickers was “Escape to Wisconsin” and it is still the moto of many Wisconsin residents and fans from nearby states that view Wisconsin as “My very own State Park”.

The fall season brings out all things pumpkin and most people enjoy that.  And I will admit to a particular fondness for the Wisconsinmade Pumpkin Cream Cheesecake   And maybe a latte or two.  And some Wisconsinmade Pumpkin Spice Carmel Corn.  And pumpkin ice cream. OK, so I guess I am a fan.  But it is possible to overdue a good thing right?

Wisconsin being an agricultural state grows lots of pumpkins and hosts fall harvest festivals.  Each fall the city of Cedarburg, Wisconsin hosts a pumpkin contest as part of their Wine and Harvest Festival .  The winning pumpkin came in at 2,145 pounds.  It was grown in Streator, Illinois, by a man named Gene McMullen.  Over a ton in one pumpkin!

I Scream For Ice Cream

Babcock Hall Ice cream pints

Recently Reuters published an article detailing the changing tastes in the ice cream market.  Among other changes noticed in the worldwide markets for ice cream they reported that consumers are turning to niche brands with unusual ingredients.  The mindset they quoted was “If I’m gonna have some ice cream, it’s gotta be the good stuff.”

Here in Wisconsin, the dairy state, we specialize in “the good stuff.”  The University of Wisconsin Madison has as part of their agriculture school an entire laboratory and production facility devoted Babcock Hall ice cream productionto the process of producing high quality ice cream and teaching students how it is done.  As a result Wisconsin manufacturers include Chocolate Shoppe, Cedar Crest and the UW’s own Babcock Hall  brands of ice cream.  Graduates from this program are in high demand.

5 Wisconsin Gifts to Get Your Boss On Boss’s Day That Will Probably Earn You a Raise

I know I’m early but I wanted to remind you that Boss’s Day is October 16. If you like your boss, you should start thinking about getting your boss a card or maybe even a gift. A good boss deserves a card because they at least complete the first two steps of being a good boss.

  • Remembering employees’ names, saying hi and making an attempt to get to know everyone.
  • Checking in on employees and making sure they have what they need to do their job.

And that’s it! It’s surprising how many bosses don’t even complete the first two steps to earn a card. Now, a few bosses are GREAT bosses, a great boss completes the first two points AND does one or more of the following:

  • Gives you regular constructive feedback on your work.
  • Makes you feel appreciated.
  • Makes you feel like you’re not afraid to make mistakes.

Does your boss make it into the gift category? Great! Here are some fun gift ideas, and there’s even a good chance the boss will share these with the whole office.

5 Reasons The Kringle Deserves To Be The Wisconsin State Pastry

5-reasons-kringle

We’re famous for our politics here in Wisconsin, but legislators put their disagreements aside to make the Kringle the state pastry of Wisconsin. The staff at Wisconsinmade.com couldn’t be more thrilled! Here are five reasons why we think the Kringle deserves to be the Wisconsin state pastry:

1. The flakey layers. The layers are the key to an out-of-this-world delicious Kringle, and no self respecting Racine bakery would make a Kringle with less than 32 layers of golden, flakey pastry. That’s why it takes a skilled baker to construct the perfect Kringle. More on that later.

2. The history. Bakers practice the special skill of Kringle crafting in Racine, Wisconsin, a town that fancies itself the Kringle Capital of the World. Immigrants from Denmark settled in Racine, and began making Kringles based on their Danish baking traditions. The Danish bakeries set up their ovens in Racine,Wisconsin, including O & H Danish Bakery, where the Olsen family has been making Kringles for over 60 years.

3. The variety. Traditionally, bakers make Kringles in an oval shape and use fillings like raspberry, apple or pecan, but more recently bakers have started getting creative. Heart-shaped Kringles with pink icing often appear on Mother’s Day or Valentine’s Day, and Kringles topped with green and gold sprinkles are a favorite among Packer fans during football season.

4. Kringles make great gifts.  At Wisconsinmade.com we fancy ourselves gift  giving experts, and when we need to give gifts to our friends, we often send a Kringle. We’ve noticed that we see an influx of Kringe orders at Christmas time since they are unique, sharable, and loved by all. We rarely meet anyone who doesn’t love a Kringle.

5. You can enjoy a freshly baked Wisconsin Kringle anywhere in the continental USA.  The former state pastry, the cream puff, is dairy filled and quintessentially Wisconsin, but at Wisconsinmade.com, our passion is sending a taste of Wisconsin to the rest of the USA. Try as we might, cream puff’s just don’t travel well. Kringles, on the other hand, travel splendidly. Bakeries in Racine bake them daily and the staff at Wisconsinmade.com works hard to send them to Kringle fans nationwide.

Sorry if I’ve made you hungry, but don’t worry, with a few clicks you can have a Kringle on its way to your door!
