In previous posts I’ve written about the joys of vacationing at one’s cottage or cabin on a beautiful Wisconsin lake. I’ve shown sunset pictures of empty boats beckoning busy people to relax and enjoy an evening boat ride. My zeal for Wisconsin farms and lakes may have given some readers the impression that folks here nightly step right from the milk barn and on to their boats. Truth be told however, most of us Wisconsinites don’t own a farm or a cabin. Most of us don’t even have a boat. It would be physically impossible for all of us to live on a lake. But on the other hand none of us lives prohibitively far from a lake either. Rumor has it Wisconsin sports even more lakes than our neighbors to the NW; we just don’t boast about it.

Visit Wisconsin and you’ll find that a family boat ride on a Wisconsin lake is possible, even recommended…. and affordable. Last weekend, to celebrate the joint birthdays of two 10-year-old little girls, friends and I rented pedal boats on Lake Wingra in Madison, Wisconsin. The girls got to commandeer their own vessel while parents, a little brother, and a puppy pedaled nearby. The day was beautiful, the weather perfect, the lake and shoreline picturesque. Our boat ride could have been relaxing. We saw other people gently pedaling their boats or paddling their canoes in a quintessential scene of easy recreation. But our trip was not so staid. Pedal boats manned by children transform into bumper cars. To read more and a delicious, easy recipe for grilled fish, click on “Continue reading”…
