September in Wisconsin is NOT the time to cook in the kitchen. Wisconsin’s September weather with its warm, sunny, blue sky days, low-humidity, gentle breezes, cool nights for deck parties and sound sleeping all remind Wisconsinites why we live here and make us resolve never to leave.

Therefore, in September, fun things to do in Wisconsin abound! So many, that we Wisconsinites are making tough choices. Do we go take walks? Bike rides? Canoe rides on the Wisconsin River – (Nina’s choice last week after work.) Sports events for all ages dominate the weekend schedules: kids’ soccer and high school football games in the morning, Badger and Packer games in the afternoons. True most of us watch the Packers on TV. But after the game ends in the afternoon, Wisconsinites exit en masse from their homes and begin to do something – anything – outside. I greeted nearly all my neighbors strolling the streets after the Packer game  two Sundays ago. The Packers had won; the mood was buoyant; the weather ideal! Life is just fine here in Wisconsin.

In September, entire Wisconsin towns block off their Main Streets and throw weekend-long, town parties. Last weekend, Monroe, Wisconsin celebrated its cheese-making heritage. World-class cheese-makers demonstrated how they make cheese. Kids learned everything about the wonderful art of cheese-making from the sweet grass cows eat, to the milking, to the cooking, stirring, and separating, to the aging process of cheese, to the delicious tasting. Adults washed down squeaky-fresh cheese curds with fresh micro-brewery beers and listened to live music in the streets. And the town topped off the fun with the Wisconsin-famous, Monroe Cheese Days Parade!

But if you missed it, there’s always this up-coming weekend’s fun at the Cornish Festival in Mineral Point, Wisconsin. The town celebrates its mining heritage with tours of historical homes dating back to the 1840’s, a carriage-driving contest, numerous classes in Celtic and Cornish crafts, buffets of traditional Cornish foods, quilting displays, and live music and entertainment.

This weekend in northern Wisconsin, Minocqua has fun with its 44th Annual Beef-A-Rama festival, – packed with beef-eating, contests in moo-calling, dancing to live music, and of course, a parade.

The town of Manitowish celebrates the fall colors and cranberry harvest with its Cranberry Colorama.  Sharon, Wisconsin celebrates its pioneer founders with Homesteader’s Days.

Broadhead hosts its Autumn Fest and Sugar River Bike Tour. The Fall Harvest Festival happens this weekend in Crivitz. Appleton parties at its annual Octoberfest.
